Seachem Matrix is a high-capacity biofiltration media designed to efficiently remove nitrogenous waste from aquarium water. This highly porous biomedia provides both external and internal macroporous surface areas, making it ideal for supporting nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria. Each liter of Matrix offers over 700 square meters of surface area, equivalent to the surface area of 170 liters of plastic bio-materials. Matrix is completely inert, does not break down, and can be used in all types of wet or wet-dry filters, including canister filters and drip tray systems.

Key Features

  • High Porosity: Provides an enormous surface area (>700 m²/L) for beneficial bacteria.
  • Efficient Biofiltration: Supports both nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria, removing ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate.
  • Durable and Inert: Will not break down and does not need to be replaced.
  • Versatile: Suitable for all types of wet or wet-dry filters.
  • Large Size: No filter bag required for most applications.

Why Choose Seachem Matrix?

  • Superior Biofiltration: Provides both external and internal macroporous surface area, supporting a wide range of beneficial bacteria.
  • Long-Lasting: Completely inert and durable, ensuring long-term use without the need for replacement.
  • Proven Results: Trusted by hobbyists and professionals for over a decade with excellent results.

Initial Setup:

  1. Preparation:

    • Rinse Thoroughly: Before adding Seachem Matrix to your aquarium, rinse it thoroughly with dechlorinated water to remove any dust or debris. If using tap water, treat it with a water conditioner like Seachem Prime to neutralize chlorine and chloramine.
  2. Placement:

    • Filter Media Bag: Place the rinsed Matrix in a filter media bag. This makes it easier to handle and maintain.
    • Filter Installation: Insert the media bag into your filter. Matrix can be used in canister filters, hang-on-back filters, or sumps. Ensure it is placed in an area with good water flow to maximize its effectiveness.
  3. Initial Dosing:

    • Amount: Use 500 mL of Matrix for every 200 liters (50 gallons) of aquarium water. Adjust the quantity based on your tank size.

Maintenance:

  1. Regular Cleaning:

    • Frequency: During regular filter maintenance, rinse the Matrix media bag in aquarium water that you have removed during a water change. Avoid using tap water directly as it can kill beneficial bacteria.
    • Debris Removal: Gently shake the media bag to dislodge any accumulated debris. This helps maintain optimal water flow and filtration efficiency.
  2. Replacement:

    • Longevity: Seachem Matrix does not need to be replaced frequently. It can last for several years with proper maintenance.
    • Partial Replacement: If you notice a decline in filtration efficiency, consider replacing a portion (about 25-50%) of the Matrix media. This helps maintain a stable bacterial population while introducing fresh media.
  3. Monitoring:

    • Water Parameters: Regularly test your aquarium water for ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates. This helps ensure that the biological filtration is functioning effectively.
    • Adjustments: If you observe elevated levels of these compounds, check the placement and cleanliness of the Matrix media and adjust as necessary.
  1. Is Seachem Matrix just pumice?
No, Matrix is a specific type of porous stone chosen for its high porosity, pore size, durability, and inert nature.

  2. Why are my nitrates not decreasing?
The removal of nitrates depends on the rate at which your tank produces and removes them. Ensure proper tank management and adequate biofiltration.

  3. Do I need to replace Matrix?
No, Matrix is durable and does not need to be replaced. It can be rinsed when necessary.

  4. Available Sizes?
    250ml, 500ml, 1L & 2L
